The Goat Tower

The Fairview Wine and Cheese farm in South Africa is famous for more than just its wine and cheese. Owned and run by Charles Back, it houses a unique monument built for the comfort and use of the farm’s goats – The Goat Tower. Acknowledging the fact that goats love to climb, sometimes even up on livestock, to get a better view, Back first got the idea of the tower some thirty years ago.

The tower, a first of its kind, is built of brick and mortar, and consists of a steep metal roof. It also has a spiral staircase made of wood, and windows too. The goats in Fairview farm have the privilege of climbing the two-story tower at will, resting within it. Since 1981, the tower has become a symbol of the winery, so much so that they produce a wine called “Goats do Roam”. The goat tower is by far, the first known to be built with such a purpose in mind. However, according to Back, the tower was inspired by a similar one his parents had seen during a vacation in Portugal. As a result of that trip the farms first goats were purchased, and the tower built.

Giant Outdoor Escalator Built in Colombian Shanty Town

A huge outdoor escalator has been unveiled in one of the poorest districts of Colombia’s second largest city.

Until now residents of Medellin’s Comuna 13 district have had to climb hundreds of steps to get around the shantytown, which clings to the side of a steep hill. Journey times will be reduced from over half an hour to six minutes.

“It’s wonderful, it’s a dream come true, and I was one of the first to use it,” said one local woman delightedly.

The escalator, 384 metres long, cost the equivalent of just over 5 million euros and is one of several infrastructure projects in the city.

Medellin’s mayor Alonso Salazar said he hoped it would help to improve life in a district known for urban violence.

Officials from Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro are said to be interested in the scheme.

The Unfolding Apartment

Video Description:
In 2005, third-grade-teacher Eric Schneider bought as big as an apartment as he could afford in Manhattan. He paid $235,000 for a 450-square-foot studio with a tiny kitchen.

Then he let architects Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Normal Projects design a way to pack more density into his small space.

In order to fit more apartment in a small footprint, they created an object that's bigger than furniture, but smaller than architecture and that morphs with the changing activities of a day.

It's a large, blue, oversized cabinet that houses all of the walls/bed/tables/shelving/closets needed for at least 4 full-sized rooms.

By continuing to unfold, or fold differently, Schneider can create a bedroom with accompanying built-in nightstand and closets, but an office plus library, a guest bedroom, and a living room. Or close it up entirely and simply flip down the small bar and the room becomes entertaining space for a dozen.

The Normal Projects architects called their creation the Unfolding Apartment, though given Schneider's affinity for the Japanese sense of space (he spent his first year post-college living and teaching in Japan), it could as easily be called the Origami Apartment.

In total, Schneider spent $70,000 total remodeling his new apartment and this includes not just the cabinet, but the bathroom renovation, all cabinetry, kitchen appliances, furniture and dishes.

In this video, Chen shows us his custom cabinet of rooms and Schneider unfolds a few of his favorite configurations: his bedroom (& closet/changing room), office (& library), guest bedroom, kitchen, dining bar, living room and lounge.

Every Single Significant Bat-Suit Ever

Every Batman bat-suit

Comic book writer Grant Morrison said it best: “[Every bat-suit is] completely different” – sometimes insanely different – “but they’re all instantly recognizable as [the-bat-suit].”

Unlike Superman, who has more or less been wearing the same blue and red strongman since Action Comics #1 in 1938, Batman just keeps changing his appearance every few years to keep up with the times. Basically, he’s the Madonna of superheroes.

Which is why I created this Batman infographic — to keep track of every single “significant” bat-suit across all mediums (which excludes a grand majority of the bat-suits featured in non-canonical comic books, in case you were wondering).

In part, what makes Batman such an excellent comic book/movie/television/video game/theatrical character is his unique ability to comfortably exist inside of just about every kind of story. He can fight gods. He can play superhero. He can be the world’s greatest detective or just solve petty street crimes. Whether the story is gritty, ridiculous, or brimming with science-fiction – or in the case of Grant Morrison’s work on the character, all of the above – Batman is always capable of thriving creatively.

Batman’s neverending bat-suit wardrobe is a symptom of that. He can wear just about any sort of outfit, for any sort of story or scenario, and still be the most popular superhero in existence. He’s just that good, man.

Mysterious Space Ball Falls From The Sky

A large metallic ball has fallen from the heavens and landed in a remote region of Namibia, spurring a lot of speculation about its origins and spurring local authorities to get NASA and the European Space Agency on the horn. No one is sure where the hollow metallic object came from, but it definitely came down hard--it was found 60 feet away from its landing site, a hole more than a foot deep and 12 feet across.

Made of a “metal alloy known to man,” the 13-pound ball is about 43 inches in circumference and landed roughly 480 miles from the Namibian capital of Windhoek. And it turns out it’s not alone. Apparently several similar objects have fallen across the southern hemisphere (in Australia and Latin America as well as elsewhere in Africa) over the past couple of decades.

So far, it has not exploded, hatched, or started to glow with a faint, eerie white light. Nor has anyone descended from the sky looking for it. If that happens, we’ll be sure to post something about it here.

Man Publishes Book of 200 Blank Pages: ‘Everything Obama Knows About The Economy’

Get yours here!
It didn’t take very long for Jimmy Moncrief to put together his new 200-page book, “Everything Obama Knows About The Economy.”

Every page of the book is blank.

The 30-year-old banker from Chattanooga, Tenn., told The Daily Caller in an interview that he’s sold hundreds of copies of his gag gift to Christmas shoppers since it was released several weeks ago.

“Initially, I made 100 of them just because I figured I had enough friends and family to kind of give out as gifts,” Moncrief said. “But what happened was when I got a hundred, I sold them all within a week or two.”

Moncrief said the book was inspired by a similar gag book from Sheridan Simove, who wrote a 200-page bestselling collection of blank pages called: “What Every Man Thinks About Apart From Sex.”

He self-published the book and sells it on Amazon and on his website. He describes the book as “a humorous talking point” that “can also be used very effectively as a notebook.” A couple cigar shops in Chattanooga are also carrying them, Moncrief said.

“Where I live, there’s just so much hatred for Obama,” said Moncrief, an independent voter who says he doesn’t support any GOP candidate this cycle.

“I like capitalism so I was like, ‘how can I make money off this.’ It’s just a funny gift, you know? I just wanted to get people to laugh,” he said.
